Coolangatta vs Kirra: Which Beach Should You Stay At?

Hero Image

If you’re planning a trip to the Southern Gold Coast, you’ll quickly find that “Coolangatta” isn’t just one beach. It’s a beautiful, connected stretch of coastline where every pocket has its own personality.

At Kirra Point, we sit right at the pivot point of this coastline. It’s a position that lets you wake up in the calm of Kirra, while keeping the energy of Coolangatta and the sheltered coves of Rainbow Bay within a short, scenic stroll. Here’s how the local lineup looks from our front door.

Kirra Beach, QLD

Kirra Beach, QLD

This is our front yard. Right across the road from Kirra Point, Kirra Beach, QLD feels open and calm. Because the beach faces north, it stays protected from southerly winds, making it the spot for long, golden afternoons and glassy water. For families, Kirra often features a natural sand lagoon for most of the year, providing a safe, shallow swimming area tucked away from crashing waves. While the surf here is world-class, there is a genuine sense of space on the sand; you aren’t competing for a spot, and the day never feels rushed.

Coolangatta Beach

A short walk south brings you into the heart of town. Coolangatta, QLD sits directly alongside the main strip, where cafés open early and lunch runs long. This is a vibrant, social side of the coast, with immediate access to shopping at The Strand and a steady flow of people moving between the waves and the street. It’s the perfect choice for a bit of "holiday town" buzz and endless dining options.

Rainbow Bay & Greenmount

Rainbow Bay & Greenmount

Continuing around the headland, the coastline softens into a protected corner. Rainbow Bay and Greenmount are tucked away from the elements, offering gentle water and a nostalgic atmosphere. This is where families gather and afternoons stretch out until the sun drops—a wholesome pocket for classic, easy beach days.

Duranbah & Snapper Rocks

At the far eastern edge, the energy picks up. Duranbah and Snapper Rocks are the heart of the Gold Coast’s surf culture, where the ocean leads the local pace. Even if you aren't surfing, walking the headland gives you a front-row seat to the lifestyle that built this town.

The Best of All Beaches

The Best of All Beaches

One of the best parts of staying here is how easily the coast links together. The Oceanway is a flat, scenic boardwalk connecting Kirra to Coolangatta and all the way to Rainbow Bay. To make exploring even easier, we offer guest bike hire directly from Kirra Point. You can also walk the entire stretch in under 30 minutes, making a morning coffee in town and a sunset swim at Kirra feel like one effortless, car-free loop.

Back at Kirra Point Holiday Apartments, the focus is on comfort. Our apartments feature multi-bedroom layouts, full kitchens, and balconies overlooking the Pacific. It’s about having the whole coastline within reach, with a calmer home base to return to.
